A six-month-old terrier mix named Bacon twirled his way to the top over the weekend, winning the title of “Laredo’s Next Top Pet” in a spirited pet pageant organized by Laredo Animal Care Services (LACS). Inspired by America’s Next Top Model, the contest brought attention to the city’s adoptable animals through a runway-style competition, allowing each participant to show off their personality and charm in front of a live audience.
Seven dogs competed in the event, each with their unique backstory. Among them were Leah, a calm and collected German Shepherd recently tagged for adoption; Azul, a Husky mix bursting with energy; Tati, a stylish two-year-old Chihuahua with impressive leash skills; and Beaker, a mellow terrier mix with a playful edge. However, Bacon’s spirited demeanor and show-stealing twirl captivated the crowd and judges alike.
“We displayed all of our dogs, and Bacon won the crown,” said event organizer Hernandez. “He won because he did this amazing turn during his presentation and was great with the audience.” While Bacon took home the glitzy crown, he—like his fellow contestants—is still waiting to find a loving forever home.
The event was not only about celebration and competition. Earlier in the day, three cats were adopted on-site through a free adoption program hosted by LACS. These successful adoptions highlighted the core mission behind the event: to raise awareness about shelter animals and the importance of adoption.
Hernandez, a passionate advocate for animal welfare and a student pursuing a career as an exotic specialist veterinarian, emphasized that bridging the gap between the community and local shelters is vital. “I think there is a lack of connection between our community and animal welfare,” she said. “We have to stay informed and get more information out there. We could start small, like doing an event like this.”
With a background working with various animals, including alpacas and birds, Hernandez is committed to educating the public on proper pet care. Her goals go beyond one event; she aims to promote spaying and neutering, raise awareness about pet health issues, and encourage responsible ownership.
“I want to continue working with our community to get more information about certain diseases, how to take care of a pet, and general knowledge on animal wellness,” she added. “It’s a great starting point.”
Although attendance was modest, the spirit of the event was strong. Those who showed up clapped and cheered as the dogs walked the runway, clearly engaged and moved by the stories and personalities on display. For Hernandez and her team, this was just the beginning.
“The turnout was small, but we have to start somewhere,” Hernandez said. “I’m very excited to keep this going for years to come. It was a quick process to put this together, but we were dedicated to spotlighting these animals and ensuring they find amazing homes.”
“Laredo’s Next Top Pet” served as a joyful community gathering and a spark for something bigger. Hernandez envisions expanding the contest in future years, potentially incorporating educational booths, wellness resources, and even more community participation.
As for Bacon, his winning performance may be remembered for its flair, but the hope is that it also leads to a more permanent prize—a loving home. Like all shelter pets, Bacon represents a larger population of needy animals, each deserving of care, attention, and the chance to thrive.
With the event’s success, the volunteers’ energy, and the dedication of organizers like Hernandez, Laredo is taking steps toward a future where no pet is left behind. Events like this remind the community that every adoption counts, every animal matters, and sometimes, a little sparkle on the runway can light the way to real change.
